The Graham Local Schools Board of Education recognized student achievement, heard heartfelt community comments, and received updates on district initiatives during the February 23, 2026, regular meeting.
The meeting was called to order with the Pledge of Allegiance, and minutes from the January and February meetings were approved. During the hearing of the public, several community members, staff, and parents shared comments regarding Superintendent Chad Lensman’s resignation. Many expressed gratitude for his leadership, commitment to students, and visible presence throughout the district. Mr. Lensman also shared his appreciation for his years at Graham, calling it an honor to serve alongside dedicated staff and students.
The Board recognized student achievements, including girls basketball, wrestling, and swim team athletes, CBC All-League Athletes, and Middle School Power of the Pen qualifiers. They also celebrated another outstanding musical performance.
In his report, Mr. Lensman highlighted continued student success, discussed the potential development of a bike path on the GES and GMS campuses, and shared updates on the district’s EPC grant, which will support staff wellness initiatives. Mr. Lensman also shared an update on the Military Wall of Honor project, noting that donations from community members continue to support the effort, with hopes of an unveiling later this year. Along with those donations, several others were reported for various things, including student lunches, student fees, Musical needs, food bag items, student communication toys, campus signage, and many more. Mr. Lensman expressed gratitude for these generous donations and shared how they will make a huge impact.
Treasurer, Mr. Swan, reported on the selection of Garmann Miller to lead the district’s facility master planning process. After reviewing multiple submissions, the firm was chosen to help define, discover, and develop long-term facility goals with transparency and community input.
Several employees were hired to fill open roles in the district for this school year and for next. These hires include a GES Intervention Specialist, GHS Aide, and GMS Lunchroom Worker. Also, twenty-four volunteers were approved at the meeting, bringing the yearly total to approximately 200 volunteers serving Graham students this year.
Mr. Swan provided a financial update, explaining that a recent property reevaluation by Champaign County raised taxes by approximately 36%, though due to HB 186 and 335, the increase will be more in line with a 13% increase. As a result, any overages that were paid in the first half of the year will be credited toward future payments. Ms. Kite added that if taxes were paid in full, the excess may either be refunded through the Champaign County Treasurer’s Office or applied as a credit toward next year’s payments.
The Board also discussed ways to have two-way communication with community stakeholders. Mrs. Wagner highlighted the use of their Graham emails, which they regularly check and respond to.
The Board will meet again on Monday, March 16th, at 5:30 PM in the Middle School Innovation Hub.
